Smoking And Cancer

Most people think that they know the real connections between smoking and diseases. They immediately think of lung cancer and may even know someone that has died from this terrible disease, due to their smoking. But in truth, the connection between smoking and cancer is much more detailed than this, and involves many more parts of the body than just the lungs. Every part of the body is affected by smoking.
smoking cause cancer (2)
What Parts of the Body Are Affected
For example, did you know that smoking and cancer of the uterus is related? As is cancer of the entire male reproductive system as well. Many cases in either men's or women's reproductive systems are traced back to smoking.

Smoking and cancer of the mouth and throat are an obvious choice, but there is also the strong possibility of contracting of the tongue as well. Have you ever known someone that needed to have their entire tongue, or parts of it, removed because of cancer? It's not a pretty sight, that's for sure.
There is also a connection between this addiction and cancer of the kidneys, larynx, head, neck, breast (in both men and women), and liver. As a matter of fact, there is a connection between smoking and just about type of cancer one can be afflicted with. The blood, which should be delivering fresh oxygen and nutrients to the parts of the body, is now acting as a courier for terrible poison.

Why the Connection?
Just why is it that there is such a strong connection between smoking and cancer of just about every part of the body? The answer is very simple. The toxins in cigarettes are contained in the nicotine, and nicotine is absorbed very quickly and easily in the bloodstream. The blood of course reaches every pore and every cell of your body, and because of this, those toxins are carried to every part of the body as well. The blood, which should be delivering fresh oxygen and nutrients to these parts of the body, is now acting as a courier for this terrible poison. In this way, there is a connection between them of virtually every part of the body.

Other Concerns
Of course, anyone looking to quit smoking probably knows that there is more to be worried about than cancer. This habit is connected to early onset of Alzheimer's, virtually every disease of the lungs and respiratory system including bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma, and is suspected of causing birth defects in children of women who smoke. If you're looking to quit smoking, there is virtually no reason for you to not follow through on this resolution. Help is available, and you owe it to yourself to get just that.

Important Facts about Bladder Cancer

Smoking bladder cancer The bladder is a hollow organ lying within pelvis, which collects urine from the kidneys via tubes called ureters and stores it until it is full enough to empty through the urethra. Bladder cancer is any type of malignant growth in the bladder. There are two main types - superficial and invasive. The superficial tumours, sometimes known as bladder warts, do not spread and are fairly easily treated. Invasive tumours, which have spread beyond the bladder walls, have a poorer prognosis.

Bladder cancer is more common in men, especially those over the age of sixty years. Cigarette smoking is known to be a major risk factor and accounts for about 60% of all new cases. Other risk factors include exposure to chemicals as used in certain industries. Women who have regularly used permanent hair dyes are at greater risk of developing the condition, as are hairdressers. The exact causes however remain unknown and research continues.

The symptoms of bladder malignancy may include blood in the urine, also known as haematuria, and pain or frequency passing urine. These symptoms, however, are not specific and could well be related to other conditions such as urinary tract infections or kidney stones. If you notice blood in your water it is important that you see your doctor as soon as possible for some diagnostic tests. But please do not panic as the blood may be from an entirely benign source. Haematuria does not always indicate bladder cancer but must be checked out.

To diagnose the problem the doctor will take a full medical history, do a physical examination and send a specimen of urine away for testing. Depending on the results the next step may be a cystoscopy, which is a simple procedure, using a fibre-optic tube with a light source attached to inspect the inside of the bladder. The scope is passed into the bladder via the urethra. If any abnormal areas or growths are noted cells can be taken for further examination to see whether they are cancerous or not.

If cancer is diagnosed the next step is to determine whether it is localised or has spread from it's original location.

Treatment is by surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The type of cancer, age and general health of the patient will determine which treatment or combination of treatments is used.

Early diagnosis always improves the outcome. If you experience any of the above symptoms please seek immediate medical help. If you notice blood in your urine report it to your doctor so that it can be investigated and any appropriate treatment started.

If you have been diagnosed as having a bladder cancer you will need to attend for regular check ups so the condition can be monitored.

People who smoke 20 cigarettes a day for 10 years have double the risk of developing bladder cancer compared with non-smokers. If you stop smoking the risk is reduced. If you have been diagnosed with superficial bladder cancer and are a smoker, stopping smoking will greatly reduce the risk of any recurrence.

Quit Smoking to Heal Your Lung Function

We have all heard about the harmful effects of smoking and know that it turns into an obsession for millions of people. Reports have found that some people are forced to make several attempts at giving up this terrible addiction and while some are successful, others find it a tough uphill battle to quit and find their backs up against the wall.

Quit Smoking to Heal Your Lung Function
Quit Smoking to Heal Your Lung Function

Smoking can have a negative effect on several body functions and our lungs are the ones that suffer the most from this addiction. Some people require specific treatment to restore vital organ functions and overall health after they have given up smoking. The good news is that our bodies will start to work to repair damage as soon as we give up smoking. Studies have been conducted and it is a proven fact that our heart rate will decrease within 20 minutes of smoking our last cigarette. Most of our lung functions will start to see improvement within three months. Even though the natural healing process will take some time, there are certain things that we can do on our own to help it out and restore our lost health.

Make sure that you include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. By doing this, you will speed up the healing process in your lungs because they are low on fat content and rich in anti-oxidants. They will also help you to maintain good lung functions and keep them working properly.
Drinking plenty of water will also help the healing process in your lungs. You should drink at least 8 to 10 glasses a day. When you leave the house and go outside, take a water bottle with you so your body will stay well hydrated when you are away from your home. A well-hydrated body leads to good health.

Another way that you can help to heal your lungs is to incorporate some sort of physical exercise into your daily life. This has been proven to help repair the lung’s function after you have quit smoking and it also repairs the cells in your lungs that have done the damage to them. It is advised that you should try to work out 3 or 4 times a week to help speed up the healing process but be careful that you do not overwork your body as that could result in other health problems.

While exercise is one of the most important steps in the healing process of the lungs, breathing exercises are another important piece of the puzzle. These exercises will help you to strengthen your lungs and will also make your breathing much easier. Breathing exercises are also an excellent way to reduce stress in your life and as you know, we all have to deal with it at some point in our lives. Most smokers tend to light up a cigarette when they are in a stressful situation, so by reducing stress, it will help to curb the addiction.

One of the best things about quitting smoking is that you will reduce your chances of developing lung cancer. Make sure that after you quit, you make an appointment with your doctor and have a checkup as he or she can provide you with valuable information on how to take care and maintain your body and lungs so you can live life to the fullest.

How Smoking Regular Cigarettes Vs. Electronic Cigarettes Causes Damage To Your Lungs

The U.S. Surgeon General, the EPA, and the IARC have declared that smoking regular cigarettes can cause lung damage such as lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema in individuals who smoke and, through second hand smoke, to exposed loved ones. The reason this occurs is because of the approximately 4,000 chemicals that are found within tobacco products.

Looking At Lung Damage Categorically

There are many forms of damage caused by regular cigarette smoking; however, the best known of these are lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of irregular cells. Normal tissue is pre-programmed to create lungs of a certain shape and for certain functions. When these configuration instructions are wrong, that particular cell and its offspring reproduce without regard to the shape or the function of the organ. This can lead to the formulation of tumors, which obstruct the lung and make it stop functioning as it should. Exposure to carcinogens found in regular cigarette smoke can cause this by altering cellular metabolism or by causing cumulative changes to DNA which is found in the tissue lining of the bronchi.

Unlike cancer, chronic bronchitis is an inflammation of the airways found in the lung. They are called bronchial tubes and function as the pathways through which oxygen flows into the body. When irritated, they create mucus that blocks air from entering, which in turn makes it difficult to breathe. Emphysema, also known for causing breathing problems, is a progressive disease in which the tissue necessary to support the physical shape and purpose of the lung is destroyed. Under normal circumstances, air is inhaled through the bronchial tubes and transferred to the alveoli, which then absorbs the oxygen and transfers it to the body through the small blood vessels that surround the alveoli. When regular cigarette smoke is inhaled, the harmful particles in the smoke become trapped in the alveoli and cause an inflammatory response. The chemicals released during this process can eventually lead to alveoli disintegration, which then allows for a deformation of the organ’s architecture and the body’s subsequent inability to draw enough oxygen into itself, which in turn can cause heart failure and liver damage.

Is There A Cure For The Lung Damage Caused By Regular Cigarette Smoke?

Treatments are available for lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema and can range from expensive surgical procedures to intrusive prescriptive medicines; however, these are only treatments and not necessarily cures. Treatment for lung cancer can involve surgical removal of the tumor, chemotherapy, and or radiation therapy. For chronic bronchitis and emphysema sufferers, a bronchodilator can help open airways and supplemental oxygen can be prescribed to assist with functioning. However, these therapies only alleviate some of the discomfort associated with breathing problems. The only known cure for emphysema is a lung transplant, and few patients are strong enough to withstand the rigors involved in the process.

Improve Your And Your Family’s Health By Switching To An Alternative Smoking Experience

There is an alternative to treatments for lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema that does not involve a surgical procedure, using a bronchodilator, or suffering from unbearable withdrawal symptoms. Traditional cigarette smokers can improve their health and the health of their family by switching from traditional cigarettes, which contain 4,000 chemicals and carcinogens, to an electronic cigarette, also known as e-cigarettes, which contain only four ingredients: water, propylene glycol, nicotine, and a fragrance that emulates the cigarette flavor.

E-cigarettes are the electric version of a traditional cigarette. They have the appearance, feel, and tobacco flavor of regular cigarettes without the associated chemicals that make traditional cigarettes dangerous. The electronic cigarette utilizes a form of microelectronic technology that has the ability to simulate the smoking experience without the harmful smoke of a regular cigarette. The act of inhaling triggers a process which releases a harmless mist into the air that evaporates within a second, yet delivers a smoking sensation similar to that of smoking a traditional cigarette to the user. One no longer needs to rummage around looking for a lighter or worry about leaving a lit match lying around either. The microprocessor that releases the mist into the air also activates an orange glowing light at the tip of the electronic cigarette to simulate a real smoking experience.

Smoking regular cigarettes not only increases an individual’s chances of lung damage but also enhances the possibility of damage caused by second hand smoke to their exposed loved ones. E-cigarettes are a viable smoking option that does not cause lung damage. Because an electronic cigarette is truly smokeless, it eliminates the harmful smoke inhaled by those who come into contact with them and also removes the fire hazards associated with a lit flame. It is now possible to experience the smoking sensation of regular cigarettes without the risks. E-cigarettes, also known as an electronic cigarette, can shield you and your family from the health risks associated with the lung damage caused by smoking traditional cigarettes.

Bad Effects Of Smoking

The rosy picture of cigarette commercials is a far cry from the grim reality that smoking brings. Rather than help you cope with the complexities of modern living, smoking brings many people closer to the grave.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said adult male smokers lose an average of 13.2 years of life while female smokers lose 14.5 years of life.

How much damage smoking does to your body depends on the type of tobacco, the form it is smoked, the temperature it is burned, the length of time you have been smoking and your general state of health. Experts say cigarette smoking is the most dangerous form and every cigarette you smoke shortens your life.

Cigarette smokers are twice as likely to die before middle age and the average smoker aged 35 has a life expectancy five and a half years shorter than a non-smoker. In many cases, these deaths are caused by cancer.

“Cigarette smoking accounts for at least 30 percent of all cancer deaths. It is a major cause of cancers of the lung, larynx (voice box), oral cavity, pharynx (throat), esophagus (swallowing tube connected to the stomach), and bladder, and it contributes to the development of cancers of the pancreas, cervix, kidney, stomach, and also some leukemias,” according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).

“Smoking is responsible for about 87 percent of lung cancer deaths. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women, and is one of the most difficult cancers to treat. Lung cancer is a disease that can in many cases be prevented. Groups that promote non-smoking as part of their religion, such as Mormons and Seventh-day Adventists, have much lower rates of lung cancer and other smoking-related cancers,” it added.

Aside from lung cancer, smoking damages the cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems of the body. The irritating substances found in a cigarette can disturb the bronchial passages and fill the lungs with mucus.

Normally, glands in the interior lining of the lungs constantly produce mucus. Together with dirt and bacteria, the mucus is expelled from the lungs by the action of cilia or small hair-like projections.

Inhaled smoke, however, interferes with the action of cilia and stimulates mucus production. Because of this, mucus, tar and other bacteria are trapped in the lungs. Smoker's cough is a sign that the lungs are clogged with mucus and coughing is the body’s attempt to get rid of tar and phlegm.

Bacteria in the lungs can later lead to bronchitis (the Inflammation of the bronchial tubes) or emphysema in which the air passages of the lungs are enlarged. This makes breathing difficult and can damage the heart. Atherosclerosis (the hardening of the arteries) and thrombosis (the formation of blood clots) are common in smokers because the level of fatty acids and cholesterol in the blood is raised.

In the fourth part of this series, we’ll tackle the other harmful effects of smoking. Don’t miss it! To strengthen your body, take Immunitril – your first line of defense in maintaining a healthy immune system. For details, visit http://www.bodestore.com/immunitril.html.

The Primary Cause of Cancer in Smokers Isn't What You Think!

When you think of a smoker with lung cancer, what likely comes to mind, is that tobacco is responsible for the damage. This is a plausible answer, but research is beginning to paint a different picture. In school and in the media, it's taught that the carcinogens in cigarettes causes build up in the lungs that eventually turns into cancer. The truth is no one really knows what it is about cigarettes that leads to cancer, but the smart answer would be the many chemicals found inside. Integrative medicine doctors in Phoenix recommend never putting chemicals in your body if you want to prevent cancer.

There have been countless studies that have researched the effects of cigarettes and the link to cancer. What was found was that there's something else inside of cigarettes that acts as the prime culprit of lung cancer. In the integrative medicine community in Arizona, it is believed that that main culprit can potentially wreak havoc on our food supply. It could also point to their being carcinogens inside of foods that have been genetically engineered, including tobacco. However, there's no actual evidence of this yet.

So What's the Primary Culprit for Lung Cancer?

Polonium-210 was found inside of cigarettes. This is a highly radioactive element. As it decays, it releases alpha particles. Although these can't penetrate deep into your system, they can cause all sorts of damage to the cells that it does interact with. Essentially, Polonium-210 is chemically toxic. Those who have high concentrations of toxins in their body can visit an integrative medicine doctor in Phoenix, Arizona to obtain services like chelation and ozone therapy. These are sometimes used in conjunction with alternative cancer treatments in Arizona.

In nature, you can find this toxic in small quantities, so why the exposure in agriculture? It's done through calcium phosphate fertilizers that are commonly used on tobacco fields and other food crops.

The Dangers of Radioactive Fertilizer

This sounds like a horrible script for a sci-fi movie, but the concern is in real life and it's a real threat, especially for smokers. Studies reveal that this is the top culprit for lung cancer in tobacco users. It's the only substance inside of cigarettes that have shown to portray cancerous side effects in lab animals.

If you are a smoker, it's a good idea to consult with an integrative medicine physician in Phoenix to see how you can quit smoking and prevent the onset of lung cancer.

Types Of Diseases Caused By Smoking

Smoking is a serious health hazard. People are usually misled by the fact that cigarettes are sold legally and they are not fully aware how dangerous, addictive and fatal they can be. Smoking causes various truly harmful diseases; from various types of cancer, to heart and cardiovascular diseases and infections.

Here is a list of most common diseases smoking causes

1. Cancer

Smokers unfortunately have an extremely high risk of getting some type of cancer. The reason why this happens is simple: carcinogen is present in tobacco and that is a substance which causes various kinds of cancer: lung cancer, mouth and tongue cancer, and throat and gullet cancer. These diseases are almost always terminal and practically impossible to cure. More than 85% of patients with diagnosed lung cancer for instance, are smoking regularly. Unfortunately, second hand smokers are not protected as well, so they often end up getting sick and that is a real tragedy. There are other types of cancer also related to smoking: pancreatic and bladder cancer, and cervical cancer (female smokers).

2. Cardiovascular diseases

Cardiovascular diseases include heart malfunctions, problems with blood vessels, clogged arteries etc. They are a huge health problem and the major cause of death among smokers. There is a very simple medical explanation: nicotine (from cigarettes) increases the level of cholesterol in our blood. Arteries and veins get harder, they clog and become rigid. Once that happens you are at great risk of having a heart attack or stroke, because of the formation of clots. Smokers often have: thrombosis (coronary or cerebral), leg blockage, stroke or other cerebral diseases.

3. COPD a.k.a Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases

COPD is a large group of diseases which cause various breathing difficulties. Bronchitis (regular or chronic), emphysema and shortness of breath are in this category. Once you start smoking and inhaling smoke, you cause damage to your air sacks (or alveoli) and that is the main reason why smokers often suffer from these diseases.

There are other, numerous health conditions and diseases, caused by smoking. All those chemicals present in tobacco are the main reason why smokers often get sick and suffer from all these diseases. Smoking is hazardous for your oral health: teeth suffer and gums often experience problems and soreness. Mouth ulcers are also very common as well as other infections. Skin aging should also be taken seriously, because that is a direct consequence of smoking. Impotence is also connected to smoking, so quit on time before you experience even more difficulties.

Think about your health and future and think about how much money you waste on something that is actually killing you. Protect your friends and family and prevent them from inhaling hazardous second hand smoke. If you are determined to quit – you will be able to do it. Think of all the people who already struggled to quit and succeeded. Lean on your family and friends and ask for their support. Save your health and choose life.

How To Quit Smoking The Easy Way

Quitting smoking easy? That's impossible!

Well it used to be impossible but not anymore, with the help of electronic cigarettes quitting is easier then ever. The key is in emulating the real smoking experience, something the gum and the patch have been unable to do. Sure they offer a nicotine fix but it's the act of putting the cigarette in your mouth and inhaling and exhaling that most people have the hardest time coming to terms with losing.

For many smokers this is huge stress relief point, As an ex-smoker I know how hard it is to give this up. When you're at work and the boss and or the customers are getting on your nerves or when you have a little strife in the home or just after a good meal it's so tempting to step outside and smoke that cigarette.

The awesome thing about electronic cigarettes is that you can get your nicotine fix without giving up the ability to inhale and exhale the smoke, only in this case it's water vapor you're inhaling but it still has the same sensation and gives you a nicotine fix.

Why Are Electronic Cigarettes Better Than Tobacco Cigarettes?

They're better because they don't contain and of the harmful carcinogens found in cigarette smoke. You are probably aware that cigarettes are bad for you, but do you know exactly how bad they really are?

Cigarette smoke contains more than 7000 chemical compounds around 600 or so of which are known to cause cancer. Another interesting fact you may not know is that smoking is the number one cause of no less than 11 different types of cancer.

They also cause heart disease, high blood pressure and shortness of breath. The inability to breath naturally leads to a reduction in a smokers activities which can lead to poor health.

Are Electronic Cigarettes Right For Me?

If you're a smoker looking to quit or switch to a healthier way of getting your nicotine fix then I would say yes they are right for you.

If you're a non-smoker thinking this is a great way to look cool and hang with the smoker crowd than NO they are not for you. If you don't already smoke please don't take up electronic cigarettes thinking their perfectly healthy and guilt free.

The fact is nicotine in and of it's self is harmful and should not be treated as caffeine or other mild stimulants. Nicotine is what's known as a vasoconstrictor and if you're not already addicted to it just save yourself the trouble and don't start using it.

How Do I know Which Brand Is Right For Me?

There are several factors that go into selecting a brand but the best place to start is by reading electronic cigarette reviews from different sources including YouTube and websites.

Make sure the reviews you watch or read cover these four very important areas.
Taste
Throat hit
Vapor Output
Battery Quality

These have proven to be the four most important factors time and again to getting a brand that you will like and be happy with.

This is important because if you don't like the brand you choose you're likely to go back to smoking tobacco cigarettes with all of it's harmful chemicals and cancer causing agents.

It should be noted that electronic cigarettes are not an FDA approved quit smoking device but it's my personal opinion that this should not stop you from using them to quit smoking. The FDA has not approved them due to a lack of testing but I have known many people that have successfully used them to stop smoking.

They were designed with quitting in mind which is why the come in step downs of nicotine levels from strong right down to 0 nicotine.

Please leave me a comment below!

Big Tobacco And Quit Smoking Ad Campaigns In The News

Big Tobacco is a term often applied to the tobacco industry in general. Philip Morris USA and RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company are the 2 leading cigarette manufacturers in the US.

US FDA reported March 30 that U.S. health regulators said that tobacco companies must report how much formaldehyde, nicotine or any of 18 other harmful chemicals are in their products.

About 3 million American high school students and more than 45 million adults smoke cigarettes. Some 8 million Americans have smoking-related illnesses and as many as 443,000 Americans die each year from smoking-related causes such as lung cancer. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the US.

The member states of the World Health Organization created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 and is observed around the world every year on May 31.

Established in 1983, No Smoking Day works to support smokers who want to quit, and takes place the 2nd Wednesday of every March. Unfortunately this years No Smoking Day, March 14th, came around without much publicity.

But, the Center for Disease Control launched a $54 million, 12 week Quit Smoking ad campaign on March 19th that has caused a lot of media attention. The commercials being shown are very graphic, with a stroke patient named Suzy, being bathed in her hospital bed. A man that has had a tracheotomy due to smoking, with a hole in his throat, while he is shaving. Terrie, who is a bald, toothless 51-year-old woman and has a raspy voice from smoking also has a hole in her throat. The commercials have had a big impact on smokers. Calls to a quit smoking hotline doubled the first week of the campaign.

In BET News, a commentary, Not So Kool, said that although black Americans smoke less than Caucasians, they are more likely to die of lung cancer. Eight million black Americans now smoke tobacco due to direct targeting by Big Tobacco.

A campaign called "No Thanks Big Tobacco",has found sample resolutions and policies that organizations, events, venues and businesses can adopt to not accept any funding or charitable donations from the tobacco industry.

The Atria Group, the parent company of Philip Morris USA and U.S. Smokeless Tobacco, told ABC News that the company agrees smoking is addictive and causes serious disease and, for those who want to avoid the health effects of smoking, the best thing to do is to quit.

If you need help to quit smoking, go to SmokeFree .gov. They have a step by step quit guide, you can talk to an expert and find the tools you will need to quit.

Smoking Has Many Health Hazards

Smoking has many health hazards and most of us know that. It’s been said for years that getting lung cancer from smoking was usually your biggest threat .It has even been linked to bladder cancer too. Researchers from the University Of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center conducted a study that the majority of the population is not yet aware that this is true.
smoking health effect

The correlation between smoking behavior and bladder cancer risk, they found, was strong. For example, one study found that a person’s risk of developing bladder cancer goes down by 40 percent with the first four years of quitting smoking.

The general population has just not been aware of the link between smoking and bladder cancer. Only 22 percent of bladder cancer patients surveyed knew that smoking increases the risk the risk of developing the disease.

Bladder cancer is one of the most expensive forms of cancer to treat. In the United States, it is the fourth most common cancer in men and the ninth most common in women. More than 47,000 cases new cases have been diagnosed in men and 16,000 in women each year.

Now I know you hear cases all the time about ways to quit smoking. There must be hundreds of programs to help people quit smoking. Some work very well and some don’t. I still believe the best way to quit smoking is by going “cold turkey.” Many people try that and it works for some for awhile but it isn’t too long before they are back at it again.

The key to stop smoking is nothing more then a “positive mindset”. You must make a strong commitment to quit before you will ever be successful making it happen. I can speak with authority about that because I stopped smoking “cold turkey” about 35 years ago. I’ll never forget that day.

At the time, I was a salesman and had made the decision to quit smoking one morning before making my calls on my customers. The first person I visited, I ask the question, “Do you smoke”. He said, “Yes I do”. I said, “Well here’s a half pack of cigarettes you can have.”

He was dumfounded and couldn’t believe I had decided to quit smoking “cold turkey” He said he had tried many times to stop smoking himself many times but never could. I said, “Well once you are fully committed to stop you will do it but not until that time you fully make up your mind”

I have never ever had a craving to smoke a cigarette since that time. I tried several times to quit but never could until I made that strong commitment. I never took any drugs to quit either. (I’m not even sure if there were non-smoking drugs then.)

Now there are many non-smoking drugs available. One in particular that had been warned is the popular anti-smoking drug, Chantix which had been linked to elevated risk of suicide. This warning came months after the FDA first expressed concern over the psychiatric effects of the drug. Chantix helps people quit smoking by stimulating the effects of nicotine in the brain.

At the same time it is making real nicotine less effective. As early as November 2007, the FDA warned that many people were experiencing changes in emotions and behavior, including depression and suicidal thoughts, within weeks or even days of starting the drug.

By February, the agency had strengthened its message saying, “It appears increasingly likely that there may be an association between Chantix and serious neuropsychiatric Symptoms” At least 40 cases of suicide and another 400 attempted suicides have been reported among those taking Chantix. In February, the FDA asked Chantix manufacturer Pfizer to make warnings about suicidal and other psychiatric side effects more prominent of the drug’s label.

As I mentioned earlier in this article, the best way to quit smoking is by doing it “cold turkey”. You will not experience any withdrawal problems if you have seriously decided you want to quit. It’s all in the mind and if you program it right you’ll never have a problem to quit smoking. It’s no different than deciding to live a healthier life and doing whatever is necessary to make that happen. Try it, it works.

Scientists Find Biological Link Between Smoking Mothers, Attention Disorders

Need a good reason to quit smoking during pregnancy, aside from the prospect of cancer, lung and heart disease, stillbirth, infertility, and low birth weight?

In what could have far-reaching implications for treatment, scientists at Yale University have found that nicotine exposure during pregnancycan trigger long-term genetic changes in unborn babies.

These newfound genetic changes help explain why maternal smoking has been linked to a host of behavioral issues, such as ADHD.

Nicotine and genetics

Population studies have previously shown that smoking in pregnant women appeared to increase the risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, in children.

This new research is the first time scientists have discovered the biological pathway that causes the increased risk.

The study was done by Yale investigators and is published in Nature Neuroscience.

Marina Picciotto, a professor of psychiatry at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, is the paper's senior author. Picciotto says there's a critical point in fetal brain development that appears to be affected by nicotine exposure.

For the study, mice were tested to see if nicotine changes the way fetal brains develop.

"If we expose mice to nicotine during the same window of brain development that is affected in utero in humans," she asked, "can we see changes in the brain? And the answer is yes, we see very long-lasting changes of the nerve cells of the cortex."

In addition, she told VOA, these changes in the neurons were maintained even in adult mice.

Brains and behavior

And how do those changes in the brains of mice affect their behavior? After exposure to nicotine, the mice appear to have ADHD, according to Picciotto.

Normal mice, she says, usually ignore a very mild foot shock. But the nicotine-affected mice, "they just actually pay attention. They are paying attention to a stimulus that is normally screened out."

Investigators also are looking at whether the same genetic pathways are involved in Asperger's syndrome and autism, which can severely impact attention and executive functioning. So far, Picciotto says, there's no evidence of that.

Potential treatment

With the genetic changes pinpointed, the next question is whether the problem can be fixed. Picciotto says that may be possible one day.

"If we are able to block the ability of nicotine to induce these molecules, then can we also block the ability of nicotine to change the structure of these nerve cells and change behavior," she said.

But she also says that, because attention disorders seem to have a genetic component, "there may be abnormalities in this pathway in individuals with attentional dysfunction that is not due to nicotine exposure."

That's the focus of her work going forward.

"The other thing that I think will hopefully come out of this is whether we can then go and alter ... the function of these pathways," she said. "It would be really very useful to be able to change those molecular pathways ... and see if we can reverse it after the fact."

The Difference Between Electronic and Tobacco Cigarettes

If you’re like most people and didn’t grow up with smoke in the house, then you probably won’t appreciate being in public next to a person smoking. Yes, everyone has their choice of freedom, but everyone has their own opinion they are entitled to as well. With all of the studies explaining how cigarettes can cause cancer, it’s amazing that there are still so many individuals out there who just can’t fight the urge and stop.

Cigarettes can be completely addicting. Addictions aren’t easy to just wake up and be done with on a Monday morning. Smoking a cigarette may have started because of stress, or even just because of a social status. There are so many kids who just want to fit in and will do whatever they need to in order to get noticed by a certain group. If that group can relate because of smoking, then chances are if a child wants to get noticed badly enough, they will do that as well.

In today’s world, there are many people that want to stop smoking and just can’t figure out how to cut it out of their life. They visit multiple doctors, chew specific gum for the addiction, wear patches, and try anything else they can find to help them overcome such a difficult time in their life. Some people actually feel bad that they always smell like smoke because others may have told them how terrible the smell is to them. Due to the smell, they may have tried a vapor cigarette in Boston, MA. This is a newer fad that is also known as a smokeless cigarette. They are an alternative method of consuming nicotine, which is the addictive chemical found in tobacco. These new cigarettes are designed to look similar to regular cigarettes, but they don’t require a match or any flame.

How do e-cigarettes even work? Most people get confused when they first hear about this new type of smoking technique. In essence, an e-cigarette is a battery-powered device that has the ability to convert liquid nicotine into a mist or vapor that is inhaled by the individual. There are not harmful chemicals contained within the e-cigarette that is associated with smoking tobacco cigarettes. E-cigarettes are carbon monoxide and tar free.

There are many reasons why people turn to e-cigarettes rather than smoking tobacco cigarettes. E-cigarettes have been advertised as being a healthier alternative form of smoking. Since regular cigarettes cause millions of deaths every year, this has hopefully reduced that terrible statistic. People also feel that electronic cigarettes aren’t as addicting even though e-cigarettes still contain nicotine liquid. Smokers believe that if they want to try to stop their addiction, then going this route will help them do so. Since the liquid turns to a vapor or mist for inhalation, it has been believed that the “smoker’s cough” is eliminated. Whether or not that is true, it hasn’t been proven scientifically.

The cartridges that are used in an electronic cigarette have different flavors of liquid. This has made smoking seem somewhat more fun and a bigger stress reliever. The flavors range from tobacco and menthol, mint, chocolate, coffee, apple, cherry, and even caramel. You can see why it can taste much better and be less hassle of a to those around you. Since there isn’t a flame within e-cigarettes, they can be inhaled indoors.

Vaping has become more common as electronic cigarettes have had multiple advancements. Since people are feeling this is a healthier option, society has accepted it more easily than regular tobacco smoking. It isn’t as looked down upon because of the reduced harm of second-hand smoke. It’s also super easy to slip back in your pocket rather than needing a “smoke break.” Inhaling a vapor cigarette in Boston, MA might just be a better option for you.

Dental Problems Caused by Smoking

Smoking is one of the most harmful habits a person can have. This habit is directly associated with a number of health problems, including cancer and illnesses concerning the lungs. Aside from the health conditions that can arise from smoking and using tobacco products, dental health is at risk as well. The appearance and function of a smile will significantly be affected with smoking, especially if the habit has been done for a long period of time, or if cigarette smoking is done heavily on a regular basis.
dental problem caused smoking

One of the most visible signs of smoking is teeth staining. Long-term smokers and those who smoke regularly and heavily will definitely show visible nicotine stains on the teeth – especially without regular dental checkups. Nicotine and other chemicals from cigarettes will accumulate on the surface of teeth, and in between teeth and the gum line. The unsightly brown and black deposits will not be removed by regular tooth brushing or flossing alone, and will need to be removed through professional dental cleaning. The nicotine deposits and teeth discolourations may lead to tooth decay if not removed early enough. It is common to see brown, stained teeth in smokers; these visible signs can lead to tooth loss especially if the decay is extensive, and when the gums suffer problems as well.

The gums take a beating when smoking is done on a regular basis, and without proper oral hygiene habits. The chemicals that come from cigarette smoke are very harmful to the gums, which will eventually be affected adversely. Gum problems that become complicated can lead to tooth loss. Another problem that hounds those who smoke is bad breath. Even those who have just started smoking will quickly develop bad breath from the nicotine and cigarette chemicals as these interact with the saliva, and the inner mouth area.

Those who have dental implants are implored not to smoke because of the damage that the habit can cause to the implants system. Smoking can result to implant failure, even as the gums supporting the implant suffer from the harmful effects of the nicotine and other harmful chemicals. In addition, patients who have been smoking for a long time may not be eligible for an implant treatment, preventing them from getting the missing teeth solution that they need in the first place. Smoking and tobacco use increase the risk for the development of oral cancer; the habit is one of the leading causes of mouth cancer.

Quit Smoking! Two 'Marlboro Man' Died of Lung Cancer

Even the Marlboro man was not immune to the effects of cigarette smoking. Two actors who portrayed as ‘Marlboro Man’ died of lung cancer, a disease caused by cigarette smoking. The first Marlboro man Wayne McClaren appeared in the cigarette advertisement in the year 1976 and died of lung cancer in 1992. He lived for many years after being diagnosed lung cancer and promoted smoking-cessation campaigns. The second Marlboro man was David McClean who died of lung cancer in the year 1995. His family filed a suit against Phillip Morris, mentioning that David McClean had to smoke sometimes five packs of cigarettes a day, to complete commercial filming and print ad shoots for Marlboro cigarette.

This is a reality; no one can escape the effects of tobacco smoking. It is said that the first owner of the company which produced Marlboro cigarettes, Phillip Morris too, died of lung cancer. However, the validity of this statement is questionable because the cause of Phillip Morris’s death was not mentioned in biographies available online. But the possibility remains there…

In 1800s people used to smoke crude tobacco and cigars, then filters were introduced to save the cigarette industry from sales decline.

Popular books like Reader’s Digest’s have many a times conducted campaigns against smoking by warning people about its possible ill-effects on health especially cancer which made the medical and scientific journals address the issue of health concerns related with cigarette smoking.

Since then governments have taken different measures to regulate cigarette manufacturing and smoking. America recorded 124, 0000 deaths due to tobacco induced lung cancer from 1995 to 1999. Still men and women continue to take smoking pleasure. Some people just cannot imagine their life without puffs, how many of these know that smoking or other form of tobacco killed 440,000 people which make it about 20% of total deaths in the U.S. from 1995 to 1999!

As a smoker if you do not care about yourself its fine but what about your family? The environmental cigarette smoke can lead to passive smoking which may result in risk of lung cancer, heart disease, miscarriages and birth defects, developing asthma in children and adults, ear infections, aggravated asthma, allergies, and other conditions like learning difficulty in children and lung infection.
