Does Smoking Cause Thyroid Cancer?

The cause of thyroid cancer is not known with certainty. There are some experts say the main cause of thyroid cancer is chronic irritation, Then, does smoking causes thyroid cancer? Some expert believes that one of affecting factors of  the cancer is cigarette smoke.

While Dr. Ranjit Gabriel Magherra, Medical Director of ENT revealed that smokers exposed to 12 times the risk of head and neck cancer because tobacco contains 43 carcinogenic agents. He stated that, thyroid is one of the cancer in human head and neck. While other cancers are mouth, throat, vocal cords, ears, and nose cancer.

Causes of thyroid cancer

Besides the smoking, there are several other causes of thyroid cancer. From the results of a research showed that cancer is a disease that can lead to tumors. Then, the cause of the various cancer as well as thyroid caused by many factors such as: soda, low iodine and radiation of a certain treatment.

According to Appointed Associate Medical Healthway Medical, 75 percent of head and neck cancers, including thyroid cancer caused by the combined of smoking and alcohol. While, men who smoke have higher the cancer risk than women.

Symptoms of thyroid cancer

Thyroid cancer is not known by many people because they do not know the symptoms. The symptoms of thyroid cancer is difficult to detect because the thyroid and mumps symptoms are same. Generally,  Thyroid cancer is complained as nodules which not pain.

The Symptoms and sign of thyroid cancer associated nodules as follows:

• Increased rate of malignancy in males

• Rapid growth: Ominous sign

• Usually painless (nontender to palpation); sudden onset of pain more strongly associated with benign disease (eg, hemorrhage into a benign cyst, subacute viral thyroiditis)

• Hard and fixed nodules

• Nodular growth

• Solitary nodules: Most likely to be malignant in patients older than 60 years and in patients younger than 30 years

Thyroid cancer or commonly referred to as lymphoma is a type of cancer that is located in the neck and is shaped like a butterfly. This cancer is not malignant but if not treated quickly will develop into malignant and can cause death to the sufferer. 

Therefore, smoking is one of cause of thyroid cancer. Especially if you drink alcohol, soda, less sodium, and radiation. Actually, to prevent thyroid cancer is easy. We to have to change our lifestyle into a healthy lifestyle, especially reducing smoking.
