Why Quit Smoking

Hundreds of millions of people in world are smokers. In the United States alone there are about 46 million today and there are many more people who have quit smoking in the United States. Even in some third world countries where the majority of the population earns less than a dollar a day you will find many people smoking tobacco there. The reason many of these people are smoking is that a substance in tobacco called nicotine is addictive and like any other drug once you are addicted to smoking it will be very difficult to go back.

One of the main reasons why to quit smoking is your health is on the line. A residual substance in tobacco called tar gets into your system when you inhale the smoke.

Every time you smoke this tar gets into your lungs and the effects are blackened lungs and reduced lung capacity. Once the tar has filled up in your lungs it will be very difficult for you to perform intense physical activity like exercise because you will get winded soon after starting. Some people who have been smoking for long periods of time cannot even walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded. In some severe cases people have installed oxygen in their homes which they carry all around with them because they cannot do anything without getting winded. When this happens especially when you reach senior age, you will not be able to do anything for yourself because you did not quit smoking.

Another reason you should quit smoking is that smoking has been known to increase the chances of developing lung cancer riskand throat cancer. Many of the substances, including tar, in tobacco are toxic and they can have cancerous effects.

1 in 5 deaths in the United States are caused by tobacco related illnesses. This should be something that raises alarm and that statistic on its own should be enough to get you to quit smoking. 1 cigarette has been known to chalk off about an hour from your life. That means if you smoke about 12 a day you would have chalked off a year of your life within 2 years of smoking.

Another reason you should quit smoking and quit smoking now is that once the addiction to nicotine gets very strong it can be very difficult to quit smoking then. Better to quit smoking now, while you have your health and while it is easier to quit and the withdrawal symptoms are not so severe.

There is a lot of information on how you can quit smoking online which can help you discern which quit smoking methods are right for you.
